Road name is sign of council confusion

Bungling council workers have installed signs with different names on either side of the same Black Country street.

Families living in Knowles Street in Wednesbury spotted the mix-up, with one sign reading correctly and one across the road saying Knowles Road.

Council bosses have now pledged to remove the wrong sign immediately and find out how the mistake occurred.

There was confusion after council chiefs replaced an old green sign on one side of the street with a new white one with the incorrect name.

It had been installed at the junction of Knowles Street and Brunswick Park Road. Wednesbury North councillor Bill Archer said he had been alerted to the problem by eagle eyed residents.

He said: "It's such a waste of taxpayers' money.

"It must have incurred cost getting the sign made, delivered and installed and then removed again.

"My concern is for people making deliveries to houses or for anyone trying to visit who does not know the area."

Sandwell Council's cabinet member for neighbourhoods and housing Councillor Mahboob Hussain said: "I have asked for the sign to be removed today and will investigate how this happened," he said.
