The lump fell from a building in Lichfield Street and crashed on to the pavement next to the Goose in the City pub at around 1.10pm, scattering debris near to dozens of shoppers.

The masonry, which fell from the top of a row of Victorian buildings, narrowly missed 19-year old Tammy Shannon, of Bishops Wood, South Staffordshire.

"I was just waiting for the bus when I heard this big bang and bits of dust and stone went all in my face," she said. "The stone landed right by my feet, I feel lucky to be alive to be honest."

The area was this afternoon cordoned off by police and the council's emergency services team were also called to the scene. Passer-by David Smith, aged 50, of Brixton, London, said: "I'm up here to see a friend and we were both standing by the bus stop when we heard the bang. "The pavement actually started to vibrate, it was so heavy. The girl is so, so lucky."
