The nine-mile hen night trek

Most brides-to-be would be happy having a slap up meal with the girls, before heading into town for an evening on the dance floor as the perfect hen night entertainment.

Yet one Cannock woman is opting for an altogether different type of celebration - one which involves trekking for nine miles until the early hours of the morning with 22 of her pals.

Cara Taylor is going to spend around three hours taking in all the sights of Lichfield this Saturday, to raise around £1,000 in memory of a friend who died of cancer.

She is taking part in a special 'Solstice Walk' hen do to raise the cash for St Giles Hospice, after her friend Jane Blythe died of the disease four years ago.

The 34-year old HR worker is taking all the girls for a slap up curry in the city centre once the feat is complete, which is expected to be around 1am on Sunday.

Her hen night feat will be then be followed up in the autumn when she gets married to her fiance Mark Russon, whom she met 10 years ago through a blind date set up by one of her friends.

The walk is starting at The Friary in Eastern Avenue, Lichfield, and will go round the city twice before finishing off where it started.

Miss Taylor said: "We are starting at the Friary and will walk a 4.5 mile loop around Lichfield twice.

"We will take take in the cathedral and a whole range of streets along the way, I reckon it will take around three hours.

"There are 22 people in my group, including school friends I've known for years, some are from far as London. We've raised around £1,000 but the more, the better.

"We are really looking forward to it and a curry house is staying open for us until the early hours, so we can go for a meal afterwards."

For the entire event, 1,400 women are taking part, making it one of the biggest charity events ever to be staged by St Giles Hospice.

The streets of Lichfield will be brought to a standstill for the event, and event organisers say there is still time to make donations to each of the contestants.
