Motorists trying to use the M6 motorway were faced with a barrage of delays following a series of accidents over the course of yesterday.

A crash between a lorry, a van and a car on the southbound carriageway between J14 Stafford North and J13 Stafford South blocked two lanes of the motorway for over an hour causing over six miles of tailbacks just after 10.50am yesterday morning.

A woman in her 70s, who was a passenger in the car, suffered an arm injury and was taken to Stafford Hospital. The drivers of all three vehicles escaped the crash unhurt. As a result of this accident, a second minor accident took place between J13 Stafford South and J12 Cannock between two cars around 15 minutes later as the cars slowed down due to the congestion.

Suzie Fothergill, a spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said no-one suffered injuries as a result of the second minor accident.

She said: "We were called to a number of incidents on the M6. The first we attended was a collision between a lorry, a van and a car. Following that there was a second incident which we believe resulted from the first one because there was quite a bit of queuing traffic. Luckily, no-one was injured in that."

Motorists' woes continued into the afternoon with a crash happening around 2.40pm between a car and a pick-up truck on the northbound carriageway between J15 Stoke-on-Trent and J16 Crewe. The driver of the van, who is in his 30s, suffered a head injury while the back seat passengers of the car, both in their 20s, suffered injuries.
