Part of the M54 near Wolverhampton will be closed overnight to allow new signs warning drivers of accidents to be installed.

The new overhead electronic signs will be installed on the M54 westbound carriageway between the M6 at Junction 10a for Essington, where the M54 starts, and the M54 Junction 2 at Wolverhampton between Tuesday and Thursday. Work will also stretch to Junction 1 at Cannock.

The new message signs have lights that can be changed at a moment's notice to give different information about accidents and diversions as well as queues.

The M54 westbound carriageway will be closed between the M6 at Junction 10a and the M54 at Junction 2 Stafford Road from 10pm on Tuesday to 6am on Wednesday. There will be a signposted diversion route.

The westbound M54 will be closed at Junction 1 for Cannock and Junction 2 from 10pm on Wednesday to 6am on Thursday. The slip roads at both junctions will remain open and traffic will be permitted to use the inside lane only. Junction 1 traffic will be diverted off the motorway and back on the other side of the junction.

At Junction 2 traffic will again be directed down the slip road and back on the other side of the junction to rejoin the M54 westbound.
