The early-nineties building could be redeveloped into a state-of-the-art superclub, under ambitious plans proposed by its likely new owner.

The former Colosseum on Newport Road suddenly closed in October.

At the time, owners Nexum Leisure said the move was a temporary one and Zanzibar, which was built in 1967 and known as Top of the World, would reopen after a refit.

The original building was wrecked by a fire in the early nineties but was rebuilt to almost exactly the same design.

The club was put on the market in February for £500,000 and Nexum have not announced any developments since.

Now, Walsall club boss Graham Pinches has said he is in final negotiations to buy Zanzibar.

Mr Pinches added that the sale is expected to be completed over the next fortnight.

If it goes ahead on schedule and planning permission is granted, Mr Pinches hopes to transform Zanzibar with a £2 million revamp which will increase its capacity to 2,500, create a huge roof terrace for smokers and develop four rooms, catering for over-25s downstairs and over-20s upstairs.

Around 30 full and part-time jobs would also be generated.

Plans are also in the pipeline to hold dance events and screen football matches and Big Brother eviction nights.

Scott Miles, a manager with Mr Pinches' firm WSI Nightclubs, said: "With the construction of 10,000 new homes and the potential for MoD Stafford to become a super base, there's a lot going on that will potentially enhance the local economy.

"Offering a new entertainment facility will enhance the night-time economy."
