Mr Lee, who is currently the Deputy Chief Constable of Staffordshire, will temporarily replace Chris Sims who becomes Chief Constable of West Midlands Police on June 1, pending the authority's recruitment of a permanent successor.

Councillor Mike Poulter, authority chairman, said: "We are enormously grateful to Chris Sims for the significant and important role he has played in developing our trust and confidence strategy, and in leading Staffordshire Police to a position of high standing locally, regionally and nationally.

"We wish him every success in commanding West Midlands Police. Adrian Lee will take up the role on June 1 until a permanent appointment to the post of Chief Constable has been made."

Interviews for the post of Staffordshire's Chief Constable will take place on July 28 and 29.

Staffordshire's previous chief constable Chris landed the top job on the West Midlands Police force in March. Mr Sims, aged 49, took over from Sir Paul Scott-Lee, who retired last month, after seven years at the helm of West Midlands Police, one of the top policing jobs in Britain.

Councillor Poulter added he had encouraged Mr Sims to apply for the role because he had done a "tremendous job" in his year-and-a-half at the county force and was ready for the step up.
