Short Street was cordoned off, as around 40 police officers examined the scene.

The bomb disposal unit was called in after resident Sam Higgs made the discovery at lunchtime.

The 25-year-old gardener, who had only moved into the address with his partner Laura Spooner aged 32 and their three-year-old son Callum two weeks ago, was clearing out his garage at the back of the houses when he made the find.

Inside the garage were around eight three-foot high canisters. There was also an army-style jacket and pair of trousers.

Not knowing whether the canisters contained live ammunition, Mr Higgs called the emergency services and before he knew it the bomb disposal unit had cordoned off the quiet residential road.

He said: "I wasn't scared, I just wanted to find out what it was. I wasn't allowed back in there and they told me not to leave the house."

Other residents were shocked as police and bomb disposal units arrived.

Inspector Akeel Najib from Wednesbury Police Station said: "It was all imitation stuff, there was nothing live.

"It was all training equipment that you could buy over the internet."
