Thug fined for spitting at driver

A thug who spat at a Walsall bus driver was today fined and ordered to pay compensation after DNA from his saliva was used to identify him.

Darren Bernard Wall was identified by forensic experts who carried out tests on his saliva after he spat at bus driver Mark Cooper on the 370 National Express West Midlands bus service which ferries passengers between Walsall and Bloxwich via Dudley Fields.

On April 9 last year 26-year-old Wall, hurled abuse at Mr Cooper, of Manor Road Precinct, spat at him then smashed a glass screen in the door of the bus.

He appeared at Walsall Magistrates Court today for sentencing after pleading guilty to criminal damage.

Walsall Magistrates Court heard how police used DNA sampling to track the culprit after he left a sample of his saliva on the driver's cab partition during the outburst. Mr Nigel Ford, defending, said Wall was sorry for his actions and apologised to the court. Wall was handed a £65 fine and £60 court costs.

He was told to pay compensation of £440.61.
