Showpiece fountain taking shape

It is months later than planned but this picture shows how the transformation of Wolverhampton's Queen Square is finally ploughing forward with the creation of a new showpiece fountain.

Weeks after heavy blocks of polished granite were lowered into the site, the structure of the £300,000 is starting to take shape. Curved walls of granite which will form the foundation of the water feature are being put in place.

The unveiling is planned for April – eight months later than originally scheduled after the project was hit by delays due to a complicated network of underground pipes.

The square may resemble a building site but in weeks, the fountain will be complete, with two pools of water on different levels.

There will also be a walkway between them and flashing LED lights.

An underground tank, which holds thousands of litres of water, was installed just before Christmas.

Bright green hoardings which blocked the site for months were taken down in December to reveal a bare site which was covered in Tarmac to allow for Christmas celebrations to be staged.

Councillor Malcolm Gwinnett, chairman of Wolverhampton City Council's planning committee, said: "It will be a wonderful new landmark, and everybody is looking forward to seeing the fountain project complete."

Council leader Neville Patten has said he wants to pedestrianise the area by rerouting buses away from Queen Square.
