Full details of this year's scaled-down St George's Day celebrations in Wolverhampton were today revealed.

Organisers are determined to hold some festivities in the city, despite having just a £5,000 budget due to the economic crisis.

Concern that the city's Queen Square will still be out of action due to a water fountain project already eight months behind schedule has also been blamed. After a warning that celebrations would be "extremely low key", it emerged today that two days of activities would go ahead.

Red, white and blue bunting will be strung across Dudley Street, attached to poles installed for the Christmas lights.

The Lady Wulfruna organ will play thanks to city organist Steve Tovey, and bosses also hope to get a jazz band to perform.

Punch Theatre Company is set to perform a mini play in the street, featuring a damsel in distress being rescued from a dragon by a knight, who will hand out roses to female passers-by.

Councillor Malcolm Gwinnett, helping to organise the event with the council's outdoor events team, said: "We will be running the same events on two days.

"It is not a lot of money to organise something like this with but there will be things happening in the city centre.

"We all had lots of great ideas and promise that there will be far more activities lined up for an all-singing St George's Day next year."

Events will be staged on St George's Day – Thursday, April 23 – as well as Saturday, April 25.

West Bromwich's George's Day parade was being axed after funding was pulled over fears of infiltration by political extremists.
