Major work to relay water mains in Bewdley has been put on hold following fears it would have a devastating effect on trade and tourism, it was announced today.
Contractors Balfour Beatty, carrying out the work by Severn Trent Water as part of a £1 million investment, said work scheduled to start after Easter in Load Street and High Street had been postponed.
They are now having talks with councillors about the best time to carry out the work, which is due to last several months.
The postponement comes after talks with Wyre Forest District Council leader councillor John Campion, also the representative for Bewdley on Worcestershire County Council.
It followed an outcry by shop owners and organisers of events such as the Discover Bewdley Weekend, the carnival and regatta.
Councillor Derek Killingworth said that he was "relieved" Balfour Beatty had said major events would be able to go ahead.
In a statement today Balfour Beatty Plc spokesman Majorie Hooper said: "We have kept the local community and various stakeholders fully informed of our planned works programme and are trying to accommodate various changes to suit the needs of the local community."
