A yob held a penknife to the face of a man during an attempted robbery by a gang in Kidderminster.
But the victim fought back forcing the youths to flee empty-handed.
The attack happened as the victim, a man in his 30s, was walking along a footpath in Brinton Park when six youths came towards hime at about 2am on Saturday.
Two blocked his path, preventing him from walking off. One of them held a penknife towards his face and demanded money.
But the victim, who has not been named, punched the thug wielding the knife and the gang ran back into the park.
The youth with the knife is described as white, about 17 to 19-years-old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, and was wearing trainers, dark clothing and tracksuit bottoms.
Pc Carol Davenport, of Kidderminster Police, today said: "On this occasion, the victim's actions in successfully defending himself meant the youths did not get away with any money.
"However, police would not usually recommend putting up resistance, particularly when a weapon is involved, due to the potential risks involved."
Anyone who has spotted someone with facial injuries who may have been involved should call police on 0300 333 3000.
