'Danger' island under review

An island created as part of a new road network for Bilston's £176 million urban village development could be ripped out after being branded dangerous, it has emerged today.

Highways chiefs were forced to go back to "monitor and review" the new layout around the development amid claims by councillors sections are dangerous and ill-thought out.

Protesters have been demanding action over a pear-shaped road island next to an entrance at the town's Morrisons supermarket, which is said to be encouraging drivers to put themselves at risk of crashing. It is claimed shoppers are travelling straight over the island and putting themselves at risk of crashing.

Bilston councillor Steve Simkins said a survey of the site had now found that the island was dangerous. "It's absolutely ridiculous, a complete waste of money," he said. Bilston East councillors will be meeting with Highways chiefs to discuss the findings on Monday.

Council bosses said the network was designed after consultation with residents.
