The Iceland store in Surrey Close, Rumer Hill, Cannock will close in May this year with 13 members of staff affected. The store is next to the old Kwik Save building which has been empty since the supermarket chain closed down in 2007.

The Iceland branch is being forced to close after the landlords sold out to discount chain Netto which is not renewing Iceland's lease.

The buildings, including the old Kwik Save branch, will be demolished and a new Netto store built in its place.

A source at Iceland said: "There is nothing we can do. The landlords have sold out and Netto have bought the whole site.

"As far as we know the staff are not going to be made redundant but are going to re-deployed where possible to other branches and obviously there is the Cannock branch just up the road.

"We are hoping customers will support the store up to the closing date in May."

Netto has built a reputation for discount brands and cheaper prices and currently has more than 190 stores across the UK.

The Danish-owned company first opened a branch in Leeds in 1990.

Iceland already has a store in Cannock town centre, in Market Place, which opened in 1989 and created 25 jobs in the town. The company says it has no plans to close the Cannock town centre branch.

Tania Barry, marketing assistant for Iceland said: "We can confirm that the Iceland store on Surrey Close in Cannock is closing.

"We are continuing to trade up to and including May 2, 2009.

"Our landlords have informed us that the Iceland store will be demolished and that a Netto store will be built in its place."
