Unprecedented numbers are being seen un hospitals and GP surgeries, a trend which is likely to continue in the coming days. The winter pressure period has started around a fortnight earlier than normal this year. South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust says while many visits are genuine, a number of patients can be dealt with by other NHS services.
Health bosses are urging the public to seek the right treatment for their illness.
Dr Phil Ballard, medical director, said: "We are seeing a tremendous health service response across South Staffordshire to what is an unprecedented number of patients.
"Winter always brings a seasonal round of colds, flu and other ailments and one of the main problems we have been dealing with recently is a flu-like illness which is causing respiratory problems and sickness and diarrhoea. This has been causing particular problems among older people.
"While NHS staff are always there to help, there is a lot people can do for themselves and their families to avoid becoming ill or having accidents.
"Unless patients have very serious problems we urge them not to dial 999 or go to their local A&E department, but to seek the right treatment for their illness."
The PCT has issued tips for staying healthy and getting the right treatment.
These include staying at home, keeping warm and taking plenty of non-alcoholic drinks if you start to have the symptoms of flu or a heavy cold.
