The victim suffered multiple injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene.

Police closed off part of the southbound carriageway of the toll road for over two hours following the crash between T5 Lichfield and T6 Burntwood, near Chasetown, at 12.30pm yesterday.

A family of three was in one of the cars. A woman and a boy were treated for shock while a man in his 30s was treated after complaining of neck pain.

The driver of the van, a man in his 30s, and the driver of the third car, a woman in her 20s, both suffered neck pain. All five were taken to Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "The driver of one car, a man, suffered serious multiple injuries and despite the best efforts of ambulance crews nothing could be done to save him."

Meanwhile, a van driver escaped unhurt after his vehicle hit the central barrier and overturned on the M6 near Stafford today.

The van ended up on its side between the middle and outside lanes on the M6 southbound, between junctions 14 and 15 at 3.50am.
