Record numbers of fitness fans have been flocking to use a Staffordshire leisure centre following a £4.2million extension and creation of a swimming pool, delighted bosses have announced.

The improved centre in Rugeley welcomed more than 4,000 people through its doors for the first time last month, according to latest figures. Bosses said they had recorded a leap in visitor numbers since the centre's fitness suite was extended in July and the swimming pool was unveiled.

In October this year, there were 4,007 sessions, as well as 71 inductions for new members – a huge jump on numbers recorded at the same time last year when there were 2,927 fitness sessions recorded along with 58 inductions.

George Gaye, fitness supervisor at Rugeley Leisure Centre, said: "It is great to see so many people using the fitness suite.

"New circuit equipment has helped to raise these numbers, with great feedback from customers who have used the new, simple-to-use Easyline equipment."

Council leader Neil Stanley said: "The facilities at Rugeley Leisure Centre are superb, and it is wonderful that so many people are now using the fitness suite.

"The development work that was completed this summer has produced a modern leisure centre fit for the 21st Century and it is heartening that so many people are using the wonderful facilities."

As well as the fitness suite and 25-metre six-lane swimming pool, Rugeley Leisure Centre also boasts a wooden, sprung-floor sports hall for a range of activities as well as squash courts and artificial pitches. It hosts a number of aerobics and exercise classes.
