Listed building consent has now been granted to British Waterways to put up lead markers at various points to encourage people to take in the sights around the town's canal network.
It is part of an ongoing refurbishment of the canal basins which aims to attract visitors.
The trail will start on a wall on the east side of York Street lock and will continue to the south end of New Mart Bridge, the upper barge lock landing on the basin edge, along the footbridge over Upper Barge Lock, along the bridge on Engine Lane and down the footpath near Engine Lane.
The markers will have numbers on them and have been designed not to be to be obtrusive in the historical setting.
