She does two jobs to help pay the bills but now a grandmother has been given a helping hand after winning £5,000 towards her mortgage in an Express & Star competition.
Jayne Russon, of Chestnut Grove, Penkridge, was drawn as the winner in the Mortgage for a Year competition, run in conjunction with the West Bromwich Building Society.
The 48-year-old, who works as a waitress at Longford House, Cannock, and also at the Coffee Shop in Penkridge, said: "I'm really pleased to have won. When I was first told, I thought it was somebody winding me up – I just couldn't believe it."
Mrs Russon has the Express & Star delivered daily to the home she shares with her husband Paul, a garage manager, and two of their four children.
She went to the newspaper's offices in Wolverhampton to pick up her cheque from deputy editor Keith Harrison and David Johnston, divisional director of the West Bromwich Building Society.
Mr Johnston said: "The response has been absolutely tremendous.
"It's great at this time of the credit crunch to have some good news and to be handing out a cheque to someone for £5,000."
Viv Birch, the Express & Star's promotions manager, said: "We're delighted that in these hard economic times we could work with our partners at the West Bromwich Building Society to provide such a fantastic prize."
