Masked raiders armed with a shotgun and baseball bat held up a Staffordshire post office, threatening customers and staff.

The two men escaped with a substantial amount of cash after the robbery at the post office at the Stars Newsagents in Bideford Way, Cannock, yesterday.

The men, who were wearing balaclavas and gloves and spoke with northern accents, went into the post office at about 1.10pm and terrified customers and three members of staff.

They ordered one worker to fill a bag with money. Minutes later armed officers swooped on the row of shops but the men had fled.

Witnesses saw the men escape in a white Ford Escort which is believed to have been stolen from Penkridge on Sunday night.

The car was abandoned in the Longford Green area of Cannock where police say the men are believed to have met up with a getaway car.

Det Insp Pete Wyatt said: "This was a very frightening incident." Witnesses should call Cannock CID on 0300 123 4455.
