A section of Castle Road in the town was cordoned off as police launched a major inquiry.

A resident raised the alarm just after 11pm yesterday after seeing a man on the ground near the former Zanzibar nightclub.

The victim, thought to be around 50, was taken to the Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Worcester, where he died just after midnight.

Part of Castle Road is still cordoned off today causing disruption for commuters.

Two police cars were at each end of the cordon which stretched from the fire station along Castle Road to its junction with Park Lane.

Police said the closure was expected to remain in place all day.

Residents said that shortly before the victim was found lying injured in the road, a group of around six people had been making their way towards the town centre and seemed to be arguing.

One witness said: "They seemed to be disagreeing about something. A man was refusing to agree and a woman was pulling him back. There was a lot of shouting They then continued down the road and we didn't hear any more."

The victim has not yet been identified but is believed to be a 50-year-old man.

Detective Inspector Jon Marsden of West Mercia Constabulary said: "The death is currently being treated as unexplained.

"Police are trying to establish exactly what happened and how the man came by his injuries. Part of Castle Road remains cordoned off for forensic examination, CCTV is being examined and officers are conducting inquiries in the area.

"As part of the investigation we would like to speak to anyone who was walking or driving along Castle Road at the relevant time. "
