A driver was fighting for his life today after a horror head-on smash on a busy road in a village near Kidderminster.

The busy A449 at Stourton was closed for five-and-a-half hours following the crash at 6.25 last night.

The man was driving a white Ford Escort van from Kidderminster to Wombourne when it was in collision with a black Audi A3 travelling in the opposite direction.

He was trapped but firefighters freed him from the wreckage using cutting equipment and he was treated by an off-duty GP, trauma doctor and paramedics for around 45 minutes at the scene.

A 34-year-old woman also suffered minor injuries in the smash, between the Stew Pony and Whittington Inn.Both drivers were taken to Russells Hall Hospital.

West Midlands Ambulance spokesman John Hawker said the Escort driver had suffered multiple serious injuries.
