Wolverley CE Secondary School at Wolverley, near Kidderminster, has been presented with the Arts Council England Artsmark Gold Award.

The award aims to reward schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to developing dynamic Arts programmes and work with artists and organisations.

Headteacher Mr Richard North said: "It is widely recognised that the arts can transform lives and raise aspirations – therefore, improving opportunities for young people and encouraging their local communities to engage with the arts is a key priority for the Arts Council."

Jane Hill, curriculum team leader for the Arts, said: 'We are delighted to have been awarded Artsmark Gold here at Wolverley CE Secondary School.

"The award is given by the Arts Council England in recognition of the excellent work and commitment in all our Arts subjects both in and out of school.

"Our Arts provision is excellent, with a large number of students opting to study the subjects at GCSE and A-level as well as attending after-school sessions as part of our extensive Enrichment Programme.

"Staff and students have worked extremely hard and deserve the recognition this award brings."

As a specialist music college, the school's contribution to arts within the community is widely known.

The new theatre facilities, which include a stage, lighting and sound systems, projector and screen, are being used by all students, including sixth formers who have chosen to specialise in this area.

Students are currently rehearsing for the whole school production of Return to the Forbidden Planet, which will be performed at the school on January 29 and January 30 next year.

Open evening and morning sessions are to be held at the school on October 8, from 6 to 8.30 pm, and on October 9, from 9.30am to 11.30 am for parents of prospective students who will begin their secondary education in September next year.
