A driver has been airlifted to hospital after his car smashed into the central reservation on the M6 in Staffordshire.

The accident happened on the northbound carriageway between junctions 11a and 12 near Cannock at 4.40pm yesterday and caused more than nine miles of tailbacks.

Two lanes on the northbound carriageway were closed initially, before all lanes in both directions were shut to allow the ambulance to land. The motorway was re-opened by 6.30pm.
