Highways bosses at Staffordshire County Council have revealed longed-for work will begin by Christmas on plans to transform Wolverhampton Road, Newhall Street and Victoria Street into a one-way system.

Residents of those streets have been campaigning for more than a decade for action to be taken to combat nuisance parking, which has made Wolverhampton Road a nightmare for residents unable to park their cars.

Motorists have also suffered as cars have left the road narrow and dangerous to negotiate.

Dave Botfield, from Staffordshire Highways, said: "The county council has identified a source of funding for the one-way system on Wolverhampton Road and Newhall Street to be completed in this financial year."

Mr Botfield added there had been broad support from most residents, except for concerns from homeowners on Victoria Street who were concerned about rat running.

To solve this the council has proposed to extend the one-way system back to Queen Street.

He added: "We are preparing detailed drawings and we will be on site by Christmas."

The council's decision comes after councillors were previously told there was no money for the scheme.

Labour leader councillor Doug Thomas claimed money was available under a previous planning agreement.

At least £50,000 was there to be spent this year on improvements surrounding High Green and adjacent roads.

Mr Botfield did not give details of where the money had come from or how much the scheme would cost to implement.
