A rescued dog from Staffordshire who was mistreated by former owners has overcome his past to finish in the top three Handsomest Dogs at an RSPCA dog show.
Ben, a West Highland Terrier, beat off competition from 20 other dogs.
He made it into the last three with 66-year-old owner Jim Fitzpatrick. Mr Fitzpatrick rehomed Ben from the RSPCA Birmingham Animal Centre last year. Ben was abused by previous owners, and was at the centre recovering from a broken leg and wounds apparently caused by being swung around by his neck.
Mr Fitzpatrick, of Blackthorn Crescent, Hazel Slade, Cannock, said he was very proud of his pooch, adding: "Ben is a very good-natured dog and he has a real loving character.
"This was the first show we have ever been to since we rescued him.
"We actually nursed him back to health when he had his broken leg and decided to give him a home after that."
He added: "It's great to be able to take part in this expecially after what Ben has had to go through in his life.
He said that the pair received only a rosette and satisfaction for coming third.
Helen Tuite, community fundraising manager for the RSPCA Animal Centre, said: "It's great to see rescue dogs taking part and winning prizes – I think it's their chance to shine and say to the world, 'Look what we have achieved'."
The show, which was held at the RSPCA's Birmingham Animal Centre on August 10, attracted hundreds of canines from across the region and raised almost £3,000 for the charity.
The show was aimed at dogs of all sizes, colours and shapes whether young or old, pedigree or cross-breed.
As well as Handsomest Dog there were also awards for the Waggiest Tail and Dog Most Like Its Owner.
The show was officially opened by Claire Young, runner-up in this year's BBC's The Apprentice and seld-confessed animal lover.
