Growers gathered at Blue Coat Comprehensive School in Birmingham Street, Walsall, on Saturday afternoon for the annual Walsall Fuchsia and Flower Society.

Fuchsias of all colours were on display but there were also categories for other plants including dhalias, roses, mixed hanging pots, house plants and mixed flower arrangements.

Green-fingered guests were able to seek advice from experts and pick up some new discounted plants from stalls.

Among those to be recognised for the impressive growing was John Roberts, whose fabulous fuchsias won the best in show prize.

The competition was judged by Geoff Smith, who is well known on the fuchsia circuit, travelling across the country to evaluate people's growing efforts.

Mr Roberts, who is secretary of the society, said that around 150 people had attended the event where there were more than 200 exhibits and 32 competition categories.

He said: "It was really successful and the standard of entries was very impressive considering it has been a bad growing year.

"We were pleased with the number of people who came along and everybody seemed impressed, especially the judge."

Also showing off their efforts was Ron Allen, chairman of the society. Visitors packed into the hall to browse row upon row of plants and flowers.

The society, which is affiliated to the British Fuchsia Society, meets monthly and has around 80 members and the gatherings involve expert speakers and demonstrations. The society is affiliated to the British Fuchsia Society and The Royal Horticultural Society and was formed in 1992.

It has grown in popularity, becoming an annual fixture in the Walsall summer show calendar. Proceeds from the show ego towards the society's running costs.

The group meets at Pelsall Labour Club, Church Road, Walsall, on the third Monday of the month except during the month of December.
