Builder is bullied by Queen of Mean
A Black Country builder ended up as the second weakest link when he appeared on Anne Robinson's TV quiz show.
A Black Country builder ended up as the second weakest link when he appeared on Anne Robinson's TV quiz show.
And Mick Daffern described the presenter as the most horrible person he has ever met, both on and off the screen.
After successfully answering the first round question, albeit in a broad accent which led to some concern that he hadn't, he stumbled on an extremely easy second round question as nerves appeared to get the better of him.
Mr Daffern, who runs the award-winning construction firm J&G Building of Oxley with his brother John, said that Miss Robinson didn't help matters.
The presenter, known as the Queen of Mean, left him quaking with nerves.
He said: "She was awful, really nasty, not just on screen but off it as well.
"Before we went on she asked me why I kept smirking at her. I wasn't, I was just nervous.
"I looked away and said, 'I'm sorry'. She said, 'You'd better be'.
"She was really intimidating. It's ridiculous – a 40-year-old builder being scared of a 63-year-old woman but she's genuinely terrifying."
The first question posed to him on air was what do you see at the end of a tunnel at the end of a hard day?
Mr Daffern said: "The answer came out really Black Country. I said 'loyt' and was getting funny looks.
"The next question was what grain with four letters accompanies curry?
"Anyone with half a brain would say rice. But I just couldn't think. My brain melted. At home I can answer question after question.
"I have been in the audience for Distraction with Jimmy Carr and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, but it is totally different being in front of the camera, really nerve-wracking."
Such an experience might put most people off appearing on another game show but Mr Daffern is obviously a sucker for punishment.
The Willenhall resident is now on the shortlist for quiz show Golden Balls, the ITV programme that is hosted by well-known Brummie comedian Jasper Carrott.
The episode of The Weakest Link featuring Mick will be screened on BBC1 within the next few months.
