More than 1,200 drivers on a Rugeley road have been clocked breaking the speed limit in 52 hours - one every two minutes.

The speeders accounted for around 10 per cent of the vehicles using Bower Lane during patrols by its Community Speedwatch group, which monitored traffic there at various times of day between April and July.

Around 12,000 were observed over 35 sessions, with 1,208 travelling at more than 36mph with some hitting up to 55mph.

The volunteers use a speed gun to note down the details of speeding motorists, who then receive a letter from Staffordshire Police.

Residents began the campaign after years of misery. One of them, Simon Porter, said: "It has made a difference.

"Before, it was crazy. It is a narrow, bumpy road with three blind bends and a gradient."

In June, the campaigners won a battle to get a mobile speed camera van on patrol which has since visited several times.

But Mr Porter says a lack of signage hampers its effectiveness. "At the next community forum meeting we will ask for permanent speed van signs to be erected," he added.
