Fire rips through Weston pier

Thirty firefighters were today desperately tackling a huge blaze at the Grand Pier in the Somerset seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare.

Black smoke and flames are billowing into the sky and was said to be visible from Wales.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said six engines were at the scene.

Witnesses said the fire broke out at the foot of the West Tower.

The resort is hugely popular with visitors from Staffordshire and the Black Country.
