TescoKidderminster's Tesco store is to have a major refurbishment, including plans to revamp the car park entrance layout which has long baffled shoppers.

The superstore in Castle Road will be updated and the car park improved in a scheme set to cost hundreds of thousands of pounds, the retail giant announced today.

Customers have told Tesco they find the car park difficult to get in and out of as part of feedback to a survey carried out by the supermarket.

Spokesman Tony Fletcher said today: "We spoke to people who visited the store and one of the things that came out was that the car park could be confusing.

"We have decided to do something about it.

"We do an assessment of stores about every five years and Kidderminster is now in line for an upgrade.

"The plans for the store have not been finalised yet but it will be an upgrade of things which we decide need improving, such as refrigeration units.

"We hope the improvements to the store and the car park can be done at the same time."

Plans have been submitted to Wyre Forest District Council to change the road layout at the car park.

The current exit road from the store has confused shoppers as it starts off as one lane which then goes into two and back to one.

To make things simpler Tesco now plans to remove an existing traffic island on the edge of the car park and incorporate the two exit lanes into one.

The plan also includes widening the access lane to the car park to make going in and out of the store a lot easier for shoppers.

The Tesco store opened in February 2002, creating 400 jobs.

It was the first retail outlet to open at Kidderminster's 19-acre town centre waterfront redevelopment known as KTC 1.

The development was built on a site previously occupied by the Brintons carpet factory.
