But now three dog lovers in Dudley are offering an easier option by opening the town's first ever self-service dog wash – believed to be unique in the West Midlands. Pet owners can take their canines to Dirty Dogs and clean them in super-sized tubs.

The high-rise baths at the Stourbridge Road firm have little steps make it easier for dogs to get in and out and water is warmed to a comfortable temperature for both man's best friend and owner.

There are six tubs, including two in private rooms for bigger pooches and those who may not like to be close to other dogs and people.

All the necessary brushes and shampoo are provided and there are special dog dryers as well as treats for the canine customers.

Prices depend on the size of the dog and range from £6 to £10.

Rachel Cooper, who is one of three people behind the new venue, said it was aimed at people who wanted to wash their own dogs themselves but did not have the space at home.

The 29-year-old accountant from Victoria Street, Brierley Hill, said: "I have always had dogs and I know how difficult it can be to wash them.

"First you have got to lift them into the bath, which is always tricky and often they will try to escape before you have finished or they will start shaking everywhere and you get soaked.

"We want to give people a more comfortable option for both them and their dogs. Self-service dog washes have really taken off in America but are not very common over here."

Dirty Dogs, which will open within the next two weeks, will be run by her partner Brett Taylor, aged 31, who came up with the idea and also runs B2 hair salon in Stourbridge Road, and her brother Richard, also 31.

Miss Cooper said: "My boyfriend has some wacky ideas but I thought this was a good one."

Miss Cooper said: "It will also appeal to people who may not be able to afford to pay a professional dog groomer, which can be quite expensive.

"We are going for a home-from-home feel.

"We want to make it as friendly and comfortable as we can for the dogs.

"There will be treats for the dogs once they have been washed and dried."

Dog owners will also be able to make appointments to have their pooches washed for them.
