His rise from TV presenter to one of the channel's most highly-paid personalities fronting several top shows including The One Show and Match of the Day has been blamed for the separation. The shock news came in a joint statement. Hagley-born Adrian, aged 41, and Jane, 44, have two daughters, Evelyn, eight, and four-year-old Sian.

He has moved out of the home following the break-up and is now living in Barnes in South West London.

Jane presents Radio 4's Woman's Hour and met her husband when they were both at Radio 5 Live and their marriage was considered one of the strongest in showbusiness.

Since their marriage back in 1998 both their careers have flourished, although Adrian's star has risen rapidly in recent times, which sources close to the couple have claimed left him with less time for the family.

He is thought to have moved out of the family home in Shepherd's Bush, West London up to two months ago.

It has been rumoured that he finds it impossible to turn work down, which has frustrated his wife, who has left Five Live and works fewer hours on Radio 4 to spend more time with her family.

Jane had a 13-year career BBC Radio Five Live and she and Drive show co-presenter Peter Allen won six Sony Awards.

A spokesman for his agent Avalon said: "Jane and Adrian have decided to separate.

"They remain on good terms and ask that the matter is sensitively handled for the sake of their daughters."

The presenter is reported to have turned down a massive £6 million offer to transfer to ITV presenting their extended football coverage.

Instead he signed a £2 million two-year deal to stay with the BBC.
