A family had to return from their holiday in Wales after only one day because a car had careered into their Staffordshire home for the second time in a year.

Vaughan Evans, 49, received a phone call from his 74-year-old mother-in-law Mary Morris saying that a car had mounted the pavement, took out a lamp post, gone through the fence and into the front bedroom window of the annex she lives in. The crash at their home in Lower Birches Way, Rugeley, happened at around 12.30am on Wednesday.

The family had travelled down to South Wales the day before to enjoy a week's holiday.

Mr Evans, his wife, Ann, and two daughters, Victoria, six, and Claire 14 had to make the four-hour trip home from the Gower in South Wales to sort the mess out.

Mr Evans believes the damage to fencing, the brickwork structure and windows will cost around £6,000 and is now calling for a speed camera to be placed on the nearby Hednesford Road following the accident, and is raising a petition among neighbours.

The building site manager said: "Mary is still in shock which is not surprising when all of a sudden you get a car coming through the window. And it's completely spoilt our holiday as well.

"The Hednesford Road, is a very busy road.

"It is supposed to be 30mph but it's noisy with people shooting up and down like lunatics.

"I would volunteer to have a camera in front of my property. I'll polish the lens if they want me to."

He says it is the second time within 12 months that this has happened after a four-wheel drive Jeep did the same thing in July 2007.

Mr Evans added: "It's done far more damage compared with last time. There's a bus stop five metres further up the road and if a vehicle came through like that and my mother-in-law or a child was in the way they would be prime target to be hit by them."

Liz McGinn, of Staffordshire Police, confirmed an incident took place just before 12.30am on Wednesday. No-one was injured and no-one has been arrested or charged, she said.
