The first brewery to be based in Bewdley for nearly 100 years is producing its first ale which will be ready for tasting shortly.

Bewdley Brewery Ltd was set up earlier this year in the craft centre at Lax Lane.

The company has now produced its first golden ale Old School which is currently settling after being poured into casks.

The project was the brainchild of Dave Carr who owned Bewdley off licence, Tipplers, for more than 10 years and is also a former employee of Premier Ales of Wolverhampton.

Also involved in the project is Mr Carr's next door neighbour Ian Wilson.

He said: "There used to be brewery in Bewdley which was called Bewdley Brewery and Beerhouse, based in Severn Side South, which started in the 1880s and finished in around 1913.

"They had problems because the beer they produced was inconsistent. One of the brewers was called William Mucklow.

"The company produced a dark sweet beer.

"Dave has wanted to re-start a brewery in the town for years and now he's finally managed to do it."

The new beer is described as a light but sweet golden bitter with a ABV of 3.8 per cent. Pubs are already keen to stock the new beer, according to Mr Wilson.

The ale takes a week to ferment and another week contained in the cast. When it is moved from the brewery to pubs it must rest again for another three or four days after it has arrived to be ready to drink. It should be on sale early next month.
