A 22-year-old woman died today after her sports car hit a tree in Brierley Hill.

The victim, who has not been named by police, was cut from the wreckage of her Toyota MR2 by fire crews after the crash in Brettell Lane in the early hours. She was revived at the scene by paramedics but died in Russells Hall Hospital.

The accident happened outside The Swan pub when, it is believed, the woman lost control of the car before it hit a tree and was catapulted back into the middle of the road.

Watch commander Matt Payne, from Brierley Hill fire station, said: "Considering the damage to the car, we were amazed she was still alive."

Witnesses are urged to call Halesowen police station on 0845 113 5000.

A collision between two buses in Walsall, a smash in Bobbington, another accident in Brierley Hill and one in Stourbridge added to the traffic chaos across the region in the last 24 hours.Traffic piled up around Brook Holloway in Wollescote, Stourbridge, after a crash at around 5pm yesterday. A Honda Civic travelling towards Colley Gate was in collision with a Renault Clio travelling in the opposite direction.

Resident Simon Sims, who witnessed the crash, said: "I was told two men tried to run away from the scene but were held until police arrived by local residents." He was the road was closed for two hours, causing "traffic chaos".

Elsewhere, two 19-year-olds from Pensnett, one with potentially serious head injuries, were taken to hospital after the car they were in crashed in Six Ashes Road, Bobbington, just after 8 o'clock last night. And at least two people were hurt in a crash between two buses in Walsall, near the bus station, at 2.30pm yesterday.

Meanwhile a lorry was involved in a crash which blocked cars temporarily in Bromley Lane, Brierley Hill, shortly before 6am today.
