Pothole woe for drivers

Potholes in Kidderminster roads are getting worse with little sign of repairs being carried out – despite an extra £15 million earmarked for road maintenance, it is claimed.

Motorists are having to swerve to avoid the cracks, claim councillors who have called on people to report the holes in the roads in a bid to get action.

Wyre Forest Councillor Helen Dyke and husband Councillor Peter Dyke describe some roads around the town as being "in a really bad way".

They say some potholes have been waiting for repair since last year or longer.

Markings have also been placed around some of the holes but not around others, leading the two councillors to question whether Worcestershire County Council highways officials are picking and choosing which ones to repair.

The county council has borrowed £15 million for repairs to prevent further deterioration in the roads after a report highlighted the need to stop the rot.

A list of the most urgent repairs is being drawn up and highways officials have said they hope to start as soon as possible on the backlog.

The money for repair work will be available for spending from April 1.

Councillor Peter Dyke, who represents Agborough and Spennells, said: "There are roads in a really bad way with potholes that have been waiting for repair since last year and even before that. Some of them have already been made worse by the flooding damage that was experienced on some roads."

Councillor Helen Dyke said: "One of the main feeder roads for Spennells, Heronswood Road, is beginning to have major potholes appear and in some roads, such as Linnet Rise, one pothole has been marked out but others up the centre of the road have been ignored."

Lee Shrimpton, spokesman for Worcestershire County Council, said: "The list of repair work has not yet been confirmed but we want to start soon."
