Burntwood Sub Aqua Group had been approached by members of Miss Naylor's family to carry out an underwater search of the pool, known locally as The Swag, which is a feeder pool to nearby Chasewater.

Members of the group discovered the body near the shore at Norton East Road and its junction with School Road.

Staffordshire Police said there were no suspicious circumstances and are preparing a report to South Staffordshire coroner Andrew Haigh.

Bill Rooney, chairman of Burntwood Sub Aqua Group, said members of Miss Naylor's family were on the boat when she was found in the water.

He said: "We were contacted by the family, and we asked the police if it was OK.

"It's not very pleasant in the water at this time of year.

"The visibility is very bad – you can't really see anything."

School Road resident Ellen Reynolds said: "The police arrived late on Saturday morning but they wouldn't tell us anything at all.

"I've lived here for eight years, and we have never had anything like this happen before.

"It's terrible for the girl and her family."

Police said they were extremely concerned for Miss Naylor's safety after she walked out of her home in the early hours of Sunday January 13 and failed to return home.

Her disappearance was said to be totally out of character.

Miss Naylor was reported missing by her mother on Sunday evening, and she was last seen at about 2am.

Throughout last week, police searched areas surrounding Chasewater with the Staffordshire Police helicopter and also spoke to walkers and motorists using the beauty spot's car park.
