Alastair Green, aged 31, is believed to have slipped and struck his neck on the blade of the tool as he removed a tree stump.

He was found by his partner of 18 months, Joanne Green, 22, whom he was planning to marry.

Paramedics were called but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The family moved from Scotland to the Cannock area. But Alastair lived with his family in the Wombourne area from the age of nine, attending Blakeley Heath Primary School and Ounsdale High School.

He moved to Harborough, Leicestershire, six years ago where he lived with Joanne, their five-month-old son Kendrick and Joanne's four-year-old daughter Lisa.

His father Colin Green, 56, who still lives in the South Staffordshire village, said: "He was removing a tree stump in the back garden and, as we understand it, he slipped and fell.

"We're so devastated. At 6ft 4in tall, he was big and strong but he was also gentle and caring." Mr Green said he and his wife Joy, 53, and their other son Lewis, 28, who lives in Loughborough, were supporting each other following the tragedy, which happened at midday on December 19.

A keen scout as a child with 3rd Wombourne Scouts, he went on to complete a chemistry degree at Sheffield University. He moved to Harborough six years ago and was a music teacher specialising in the guitar.

Friends and former pupils are invited to the funeral at Harborough Methodist Church at 1pm on Thursday. Donations should be made to Children in Need via J Stamps & Sons Funeral Directors, Market Harborough.

A memorial service is to be held at Wombourne Methodist Church on a date to be arranged.
