Junction jams bid pays off
A £100,000 scheme has started to ease traffic congestion at an "accident blackspot" on the Kidderminster to Bewdley road.
A £100,000 scheme has started to ease traffic congestion at an "accident blackspot" on the Kidderminster to Bewdley road.
Residents and drivers were today warned to expect delays during the work which aims to stop motorists using nearby streets as "rat runs" to dodge jams.
The road is being altered to include a filter lane which will uncork a bottleneck at the bottom of Bewdley Hill and its junction with Sutton Road, Summer Place and Bewdley Road.
Currently, traffic backs up Bewdley Hill, sometimes as far the Gainsborough House Hotel, because it is unable to head towards Kidderminster town centre due to cars waiting to turn right into Sutton Road. There is no right-hand lane for cars to wait in, as the road is too narrow.
The junction is also said to have been the site of many minor accidents. The work is taking place now to ensure minimum disruption while West Midland Safari Park is closed. Motorists have been warned temporary traffic lights may cause delays.
Bob Vickers, of Hillcrest Residents Association, which represents 400 residents including those living in Bewdley Hill, said they were "delighted" work had started.
Wyre Forest District and Worcestershire County Councillor Marcus Hart, pictured, who was involved in the consultation process, said: "The improvements at the junction will be of benefit to everyone."
