John Dale led the Wood Road school from 1968 to 1994. He has been described by staff members as "a man noted for his energy, new ideas and energetic approach to teaching".

Current headmaster Peter Bodkin said: "John will be very fondly remembered by everyone." Peter Creed, governor at the school since 1978, added: "John was a wonderfully caring headmaster who served the school with great dedication."

Mr Dale had been suffering from primary progressive aphasia, which effects co-ordination, for a number of years. He died at his home in St Agnes, Cornwall, on Monday. He leaves his wife Lydia and five children. His funeral will take place in Cornwall on Saturday.
