Police have been called in because boy racers are plaguing a Heath Hayes supermarket – after they were forced out of a nearby Cannock store.

Dozens of car enthusiasts have been reportedly gathering at the Tesco store, in Heath Way, sparking fears over noise, litter and safety concerns.

Earlier this year police and bosses at Sainsbury's, on Voyager Drive, worked together to install gates to the car park which are closed daily after the supermarket closes.

This was in response to a growing problem with car meetings and associated anti-social behaviour.

But the problem has now been displaced to the Tesco store which opens 24 hours a day, leaving the car park a target for the car gangs.

Now the issue is to be debated at a public meeting at Heath Hayes Community Forum at Hayes Green Community Centre, on November 20 .

Inspector Matt Derrick, of Cannock Police, said there had been a number of complaints, but he said officers had spoken to nearby residents and they had not identified the issue as a major problem.

He said: "Often in these situations it can be more about the perception involved than actual crimes being committed."
