Man killed in accident

The 44-year-old pedestrian was treated by paramedics at the scene of the accident in Lichfield Road before being rushed to Staffordshire General Hospital in Stafford where he died from his injuries. He had been in collision with a Nissan Micra being driven by a 73-year-old woman.

The driver, from the Cannock area, was treated by paramedics for minor injuries.

The accident happened at 8.15pm yesterday, about 30 yards from the Biffa landfill site.

Sergeant Tim Jones, of Staffordshire Police, said: "The male pedestrian, a 44-year-old from Heath Hayes, was treated by paramedics at the scene and transferred to Staffordshire General Hospital where unfortunately he died from his injuries."

A serious accident also happened just a few hours later at 11.25pm on the A34 Stafford Road at Bednall Head, Bednall, between Cannock and Stafford.

A Peugeot 106 Quicksilver car was being driven towards Stafford by a 17-year-old man from Rugeley and was in collision with a Kia being driven towards Cannock by a 71-year-old woman who had an 80-year-old male passenger in the car.

Both people in the Kia car are still in Staffordshire General Hospital, but the 17-year-old driver of the Peugeot was released with minor injuries.

Firefighters had to cut the roof off the Kia car to free the two people inside. It happened 750 metres north of the Pottal Pool crossroads.

Heather Garner, spokeswoman for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said:"It was dealt with by two crews from Stafford and one from Penkridge.

"It was a two-car collision and firefighters had to use hydraulic cutting equipment."
