A motorcyclist had to be airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after his bike was in collision with a van at a notorious junction in Hednesford.
The 67-year-old man riding the Ducati motorbike, who was from the Hednesford area, suffered leg and head injuries in the collision at 4pm yesterday.
He was flown to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire where his injuries are serious but he is in a stable condition.
The accident happened at the junction of Broadhurst Green and Pye Green Road.
Sgt Alison Dando said: "A white VW van was being driven by a 24-year-old male from the Dudley area who was travelling from the direction of Stafford waiting to travel across the junction towards Hednesford.
"A Ducati motorcycle which was travelling from Cannock towards Rugeley was being riden by a 67-year-old male from the Hednesford area. As he approached the junction a collision has occurred."
Just an hour later, at 5pm, a 51-year-old motorcyclist, who has not yet been named, died following a collision on the A519 Newcastle Road in Slindon, two miles north of Eccleshall.
He was riding a Suzuki customised bike in collision with an Audi being driven by a 42-year-old man from Trentham, near Stone.
Councillor John Wakefield, the county council cabinet member for road safety, said: "The national trend for increasing casualties amongst this group is worrying. You often think of young drivers when talking about road safety but this group of older men driving high powered bikes are surprisingly vulnerable."
