Wheely big attraction

It has been dubbed the playground of the Black Country - and now people visiting the amusements in Stourport can go up in the world on an historic ferris wheel loved by Elvis.

The wheel, which has been installed at Stourport's Riverside area, is set to be a major landmark. Stourport's Riverside Amusement park is one of the oldest in the Midlands and was established about 45 years ago. Thousands of families from across the Black Country visit every year.

It was bought this year from Shipleys by the Blasmere company, run by showman Henry Danter.

Mr Danter, who is also the owner of the Symonds Yat Leisure Park, near Ross-on-Wyre, is determined to make the site bigger and better.

Paul Dorey, general manager of the Stourport Riverside Amusements, said: "The ferris wheel enables people to get a truly magnificent view of the Stourport Canal Basins.

"The ride was built by Luffe in America for a London-based showman and was loved by many of the stars in America, including Elvis Presley."

The wheel has none of the computer technology of modern rides, instead relying on old fashioned gears and levers.

Bought by Mr Danter in January, the ferris wheel has been completely refurbished and elevated lighting displays installed.

Anyone wanting to take to the skies can do so by buying 30 tickets for £12, which enable people to go on any ride, including the wheel.
