Borough's youths honoured

An ambitious young mum, budding sports stars and charity fundraisers are just some of the remarkable people who have been honoured for their achievements at a dazzling Black Country awards ceremony. Hundreds of people packed into Dudley Concert Hall for Dudley Council's glittering annual Youth Awards ceremony.

Hundreds of people packed into Dudley Concert Hall for Dudley Council's glittering annual Youth Awards ceremony.

Young mother Cara Southall picked up the accolade for bravery and courage after refusing to throw away her life after falling pregnant while still at school.

She returned back to the classroom just weeks after giving birth, successfully passed her GCSEs, gained a place at Halesowen College and now plans to become a primary school teacher. Josh Hickens, aged 11, was handed the sports award after representing his school in a host of events, including football, athletics, cricket and rugby.

James Randle has been honoured for his tireless work to improve the community.

The 18-year-old has been handed the community, charity and voluntary individual accolade after being a regular at tenants and resident association meetings to ensure young people's views are represented.

He has also campaigned for a play area and organised summer holiday activity programmes.

Community Peer Education Group was honoured for its work helping young parents achieve their dreams. And Shelley Evans, a member of green power racing team was handed an accolade for her contributions to a school or college after organising fundraising events for charity.

The arts and entertainment award went to Sophie Underhill, age 19, who has volunteered at Barnardo's for the past year.

She also dedicates time to a weekly after-school group, plans art projects for the children to complete and has created a sensory board which develops the children's skills.

Steve Ford was handed the special mary Growcott accolade due to his efforts brightening the lives of young patients at Russells Hall Hospital and helping to make their dreams a reality.

Mayor of Dudley, Councillor David Stanley said: "The youth awards is a fantastic opportunity to recognise and appreciate the work that the young people of Dudley are achieving in our communities.

"Each one is an inspiration to all other young people."
