Postal strikes to start

Postal deliveries in the West Midlands are set to be crippled by four days of strikes, it has been revealed.

Workers will walk out at the start of their shifts at midday tomorrow for 48 hours, and again at 3am on Monday for another 48 hours. The timing of the industrial action, which is due to a pay dispute with Royal Mail, effectively means there will be no collections or deliveries for at least five days.

Royal Mail said people around the Midlands should expect "severe disruption to all postal services during the strikes and for a significant period afterwards".

Unions claim 130,000 postal workers would be involved in the walkouts, which are in protest of Royal Mail's offer of a 2.5 per cent pay increase and modernisation plans. Wolverhampton's Sun Street sorting office will be on reduced staff, meaning disruption to deliveries in the city, Staffordshire and Dudley.

Bosses at Royal Mail today said they "condemned" the strike and said short and long-term solutions had been offered to the union.
