It was only the actions of Bruno the boxer dog and its owner Lee Millard that saved the day.

Fire crews were called to Johnson Road to free the cat on Saturday afternoon, shortly before 3pm, after Bruno alerted Mr Millard with his constant barking and whining. Mr Millard then called fire crews to come and free Smudge.

When they arrived Smudge was in a distressed state but after knocking down a wall they managed to free the cat.

It was then reunited with owner Graham Peters who lives just three doors away.

Mr Millard said: "The cat was wedged in between two walls. There was no way it could move and would have just starved to death. I then called the fire service who freed Smudge. He was certainly a relieved cat."

Mr Peters said: "No-one would have realised he was trapped unless Bruno hadn't discovered him."
