Tesco site plan agreed

Supermarket bosses have expressed their delight after councillors finally gave them the green light to build a new multi-million pound store in Lichfield. And it proved to be third time lucky for Tesco.

The controversial plans - which had initially attracted strong public opposition - were deferred twice by councillors, and Tesco were forced back to the drawing board to come up with a more suitable design for the Church Street site

But after modifying their plans – specifically on access/egress issues and design – bosses are delighted their application has been given the go-ahead, subject to conditions and referral to the Secretary of State.

Today Tony Fletcher, Tesco corporate affairs spokesman, issued a thank you to the council's officers for their guidance.

"Following one of the most extensive public consultation exercises in which 6,000 residents enthusiastically expressed their support for the replacement store, it was concerns raised by the immediate neighbours that sent the superstore back to the drawing board," he said.

Tesco will now demolish its current Church Street store, Focus DIY store and the former Smithfield Hotel and replace them a new store and 22 apartments.

The new store will be set on stilts, of a contemporary design and with a two-wave form roof.
